Civil Engineer: Submitted Articles

My name is Preetha George from kerala , email id geo_preetha@dataone.in I am a
civil engineer ,done my masters in Disaster Mitigation, planning to do my PhD in
the field of oral studies at the Hawaii University(Paper work in progress). We are
planning to have a tsunami museum in Kerala ,(the govt of kerala has approved the
project )I have been interacting with the delegates from Hawaii ,Ms Jeanne Branch
Johnston (founder of the Pacific Tsunami Museum) and Dr Walter Dudley,( He is a
professor at the University of Hawaii and continues his drive for tsunami
education).

I worked with these delegates in Alappad. Planning, scheduling,
organizing, and facilitating their activities was done by me. Conducted oral
interviews of tsunami survivors(At Alappad Kochi) for them on December 2006(On
behalf of the Pacific Tsunami Museum).For the proposed project(Kerala Tsunami
Museum) I am selected as its On-site Coordinator. i have been actively working with
them for more than 2 years since the deadly tsunami of 12/26/04

We approached the Kerala government ,and put forward a proposal for a tsunami museum
,the proposal has been submitted to Dr Nivedita B. Haran.(it has being approved
,it was my idea to have a museum)

Similar projects are worked out(Paper work in progress) for MG University
Dr.A.V.George (disaster management cell) and CUSAT (Dr.K.T.Damodharan Disaster
Management Cell)

The collection of community tsunami memories through video interviews with tsunami
survivors is extremely important. The information can be integrated with physical
data and thus available for use in better recreating events during the tsunami and
it will be possible to better understand the social behavior of individuals in
differing cultures when faced with such a disaster. Oral history interviews with
survivors can also be used to reconstruct the heights and extent of flooding and
thus be of value in defining danger zones. This information is of great value to
emergency planners and emergency response personnel as it can be used to refine new
zoning maps, community road maps, safe evacuation routes and evacuation plans. It is
also an extremely effective tool for community and regional disaster preparedness
education. The museum will also preserve the social and cultural history of the
state and promote economic development. The museum will serve as a living memorial
to those who lost their lives in past tsunami events.

Because a large portion of the museum is about oral history, the museum will serves
as a resource center for community residents who are interested in conducting their
own oral history projects

We believe that through education and awareness no one should ever again die due to
a tsunami
