Hydraulics and Fluid Mechanics

Hydraulics & Water Engineering involves the use of hydrologic and hydraulic principles to design irrigation and  drainage systems, reservoirs, navigational waterways, and flood control levees, dams, lakes, water distribution system etc.

It is very important to study the properties of fluids like viscosity, surface tension, specific gravity etc to understand the flow phenomena. Bernoulli's equation, continuity equation and momentum theorem are important in the analysis of hydraulic systems.

Open channel hydraulics  deals with free surface flow, such as in rivers, canals, lakes, etc.

It is very important to study applied mechanics to understand the principles of hydraulics or Fluid mechanics,

About 97% of the earth's water is salty and only 3% is available as fresh water in the form of rivers, lakes, glaciers and artificial reservoirs and underground water.

The salty water can be converted into fresh water through the process of desalination.
